indian toor dal khichdi- hotch potch

India is a country with diverse culture and millions of dishes to test your taste buds. A country with diversified food, culture and places. One of such dishes is world famous "KHICHDI". Khichdi is an Indian name to one of the best and the most simple, yet healthy dishes of India, prepared in all and sundry house hold.

There are various versions of khichdi. One of them is toor dal (split pigeon peas) khichdi.
Khichdi is usually prepared in pressure cooker, however if you do not have one, you can easily prepare in a pot, but stirring occasionaly is must.
Total Time Required: 30 minutes
Preparing time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 10 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes

INGREDIENTS:


  • 1/2 cup toor dal (split pigeon peas)
  • 1 cup rice ( you can use regular grained rice or even basmati depending on your taste bud and regular utility)
  • 1bay leaf
  • 1/2 inch ginger ( chopped or grated)
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1 pinch asafoetida (hing)
  • 1 table spoon of grated or chopped green chilli
  • 3 cups water ( for thinner version add more half a cup of water)
  • 1.5 table spoon oil/ghee
  • salt to taste
Recipe
Rinse and wash both toor dal (split pigeon peas) and rice. 
Soak toor dal (split pigeon peas) and rice together for half an hour.

How to make:

  • Heat oil/ghee in a pressure cooker or pot (as per availability)
  • Add cumin and bay leaft.
  • Saute till the cumin seeds crackle.
  • Add asafoetida.
  • Add ginger and fry till the aroma is out. ( take care to not burn ginger or else taste of khichdi will get ruined)
  • Add the drained rice and toor dal and stir it for 2 minutes
  • Add green chilli, salt, turmeric powder.
  • Stir for more 1 minute.
  • Add water. If you want thinner version add more half a cup of water
  • Pressure cook the mixture for three whistles and 5 minutes on low flame.
  • If you are cooking in a pot keep on stirring ocassionally so that it doesnt stick to the base.
  • let it pressure cooker cool
  • serve the most aromatic and healthy khichdi with kadhi,pickle, papad.
